54 : Future development of Natland - plans for our village (2) |
I have downloaded both the Local Development Framework Core Strategy document and also the Canal Head Area Action Plan document. I have copied them both onto a CD which I am happy to lend to anyone who is interested. The two files are very large and would be almost impossible to download if you only have a dial-up connection!

Alternatively, I understand that both CDs and paper copies are available from SLDC

If you want to borrow a copy of the CD, just e-mail me or call at 1 Abbey Drive.

PS I have no connection whatsoever with SLDC or the contents of these documents!

53 : Future development of Natland - SLDC's plans for our village |
I was going to download SLDC's Local Development Plan document but then had second thoughts!
I wondered if anyone is going to précis it for posting on the Natland site? Rather them than me!

52 : British Sea Power at full blast! |
Re the article on natland.info, I recently bought the British Sea Power CD and it is brilliant.

Serious rock to delicate melody – they really are good – especially at full blast in the car.

Hope the recommendation of a near pensioner doesn’t harm their image!

51 : Cherry Blossom Mystery |
I should like to know why the cherry tree in the church cemetary is not in blossom when the cherry tree just outside is?
Also many others are in and around Kendal.

Webmaster comments   I suspect the answer is that the trees in blossom are Almonds, not Chrries but can anyone confirm this?

50 : Tragedy in Grasmere |
If parents are at a loose end during the half term holiday, they might like to visit the Wordsworth Museum in Grasmere. The children of Grasmere school have been researching a tragedy that occurred 200 years ago, and have mounted an exhibition at the centre. This is all the children's own work and consists of felt pictures, artifacts of the time borrowed from local families, writings, and a play telling the tragic story of the Green's six children who were orphaned when their parents were lost in a storm walking from Langdale back to Grasmere.

The exhibition is free and may be of interest to children who are into local history etc.

For more information the web address is :www.wordsworth.org.uk/ and click on the link to 'The Greens'

Thanks Mike.

49 : Flooding on Sedgwick Road |
It is a year to the day since the last letter on this subject and despite the tinkering around with the drain cover where the water from the overflow pond overflows out of the field, once again Sedgwick Road is extensively flooded and, were it to freeze, a potential death trap.

Clearly a more radical set of solutions is urgently needed, whether it be a deeper storm drain or a bigger overflow pond or both. No doubt at some considerable cost but I do wonder if there is potential for some form of compensation from the consultants whose advice on the flood prevention measures needed to be taken when the St Mark’s Fold houses were built now seems to have proved totally inadequate?

48 : Looking for a caravan! |
Somewhere on the internet I saw a holiday caravan advertised on a farm in Natland. It was 1 of only 2, did weekend breaks and was very reasonable. I have searched for hours but cannot find it again. Can anyone help?

Webmaster comments   The only caravan site we know that is on a farm in Natland is at Natland Park Farm but we do not know if they have permanent caravans for rental. There is also a small permanent site on the lane up to Barrows Green with the name Natland Caravan Park on its gate but no entry listed in the telephone directory. Can anyone help?

47 : Aira Force picture |
Thanks for your comments.
My picture of Aira Force was taken in late morning in April - the waterfall faces south eastwards as that is the only time the light is right and in April there is not too much cover from the foliage. We did a walk over Gowbarrow, the fell above the falls, that day and ended up in a blizzard!

46 : Message from Vancouver Island |
Regarding your item on Ross Outhwaite & Lisa Thomas’ Wedding, recently I had the pleasure of meeting the mother and father of the bride while they were visiting relatives here on Vancouver Island. She gave me the web-site address for Natland and I found it most interesting to read all the local news.

Although I was not born in the Lake District, I enjoyed its beauteous surroundings for many years. I was born in Scotland, and my husband was from Manchester. It is always a pleasure to read about events in rural settings such as yours, and I would be very happy if you could place me on your mailing list. Also if you could give me the bride's mother's e-mail address, I would like to get in touch with her. We talked quite often during her visit here, but I never learned their names. Lisa's father is actually a cousin of someone who lives here on Vancouver Island.

Vancouver Island is a lovely place to live, especially in Sidney-by-the Sea which is small, unique and quite delightful. It certainly does not have the countryside or history that your homeland has, but is nevertheless a lovely place in which to retire, and very close to Victoria. I have not been back to England for many years now... since most of my travelling is between here and Toronto, where my family lives.

I was particularly interested in your "winning photos" from the Natland Photo competition.. all very charming photographs. I would be interested in knowing more about the one showing the lovely waterfall... where was that taken.. because I am sure that I have been there on previous trips to Britain. Any further information would be appreciated.

Webmaster’s comments: We have forwarded Camille’s message so, hopefully, she will soon be back in touch with Lisa’s parents and we have added her to our e-mailing list.

The Waterfall in John Fisher’s winning photograph is Aira Force which is about three miles after Glenridding up the north-east side of Ullswater. It is lovely spot and very accessible.

Camille has informed Natland.info that she would be happy to hear from Natlanders to help her keep in touch with the U.K..
