94 : Holmes' Site Development |
Further to the response of Natland Parish Council regarding the Holmes development : The ‘consultation’ document referred to is the Allocations of Land Document which is to be presented to the SLDC Cabinet in September/October of this year. The details of which can be found on the SLDC Website.

The housing provision as outlined in this document will eventually actually double the size of the Natland.

Already the lighting required to light up the existing footpath along Sedgwick Road does not comply with the current standards for a rural area. The developers are proposing to alter the existing five columns to provide ‘more focussed and directional lighting’ towards the proposed new footpath which will create more light pollution.

Natland does not have any satisfactory access roads. Concerns regarding the volume and speed of traffic along Sedgwick Road are clearly documented in the Natland Parish Plan. The developers intend to slightly widen the short section of the road next to the development but as the roads on either side remain narrow there is the danger that safety will further be degraded.

It is also doubtful as to whether due to the restrictions on what the developers admit themselves to be a 'tight site' there will be enough room for visitor and service vehicle parking and it is likely such vehicles will end up having to park along Sedgwick Road.

As to how the provision of fencing or walling to at least a height of 1.8m is going to protect the loss of privacy against houses barely 20 metres away it is hard to imagine!

92 : Sedgwick Road hedge cutting |
We disagree with the Editor's opinion (22 August) that the Sedgwick Road footpath is better after the hedge "cutting". We would describe the process as slashing and hacking - parts of the hedge on the eastern side of the path have been so badly mauled that we doubt whether they will recover. The hedges should have been properly laid, by traditional methods.

91 : Oxenholme Station Cottages |
I have more information re Oxenholme Railway Cottages:
The main buildings at Oxenholme Station were erected c 1850. They comprised five cottages, three of which were two story houses, and two were upstairs flats. They pre-dated the village cottages by over thirty years. In recent years only nos 4 & 5 have been occupied as housing, nos 2 & 3 being converted into offices, but are now empty. No 1 has been derelict since c 1939.

For many years no 2 was occupied by the Refreshment Room manageress (I remember a Miss Delaney and a Miss Place).

No 5 which was recently modernised and occupied by a member of the station team, was for 55 years the home of Ernie and Esther Gilpin, who delivered the "Lancashire Post" in Oxenholme for many years. They both lived into their 90's.

Webmaster comments   Mr Bateson was, until June, Mayor of Kendal. Further interesting information concerning these unique Station Cottages will appear shortly on the News and Features pages of the web site.

90 : Football news |
My mother was, at one time, goalie for Oxenholme Rangers! I suspect only because she owned the football.

89 : Oxenholme Railway Cottages |
I am doing research into my grandfather's family and have discovered that he was born in one of the Oxenholme railway cottages.

His name was Robert Green, born 5.8.1871, and his father, also Robert Green, was a railway labourer.

Would anyone know anything about the railway cottages please?

Thank you for this opportunity on your web site.

Webmaster comments   There are a couple of books that might be of interest to you:

88 : Bulfield family in Natland |
In the Kendal Parish Records there are Bulfields recorded in Natland from 1680 until after the 1841 Census; I should be grateful to know if anyone has any info on them?
One was recorded as Christened at Natland 'Chapel' in 1735 and I wondered whether there are any records of burials around the present Natland Church?

Webmaster comments   There is a detailed list of burials in the Natland churchyard for which you would need to contact the vicar- Reverend Angela Whittaker on 015395 60355.
However my understanding is that there were no burials at Natland before
1825 (see Natland.info page About Natland item on St Mark's Church 1825) and before then the bodies were taken to Kendal for burial, presumably at the Parish Church.

87 : Brian Nicholson |
Interested in the contributions of Brian Nicholson, esp. from Scrapbook 24.
I was at Kendal Grammar from 1951 to 56, after a couple of years at Castle Street School. We lived at Barrows Green from 49-52 and went to church at Natland sometimes. I remember the shop when the Dixons had it - met them later in New Zealand. Think I might remember Brian - does he remember me?

86 : Dog Fouling |
Dog fouling is an increasingly serious problem in Natland, affecting the whole village, but particularly Hawes Lane and the Sedgwick Road footpath. Apart from being illegal, this disgusting practice poses a real health hazard, particularly for children.

What will it take to make the minority of dog owners face their social responsibilities?

Webmaster comments   It is also illegal - and equally disgusting - to allow dogs to foul rural field paths and rights of way.

85 : Computer virus warning |
Be careful there is a computer virus running at the moment - You get an email supposedly from DHL saying a parcel could not be delivered due to wrong address and is awaiting collection at the DHL post office. Attached is the delivery advice - fortunately my anti virus would not allow the attachment onto our computer - I found out it was a computer virus scam following an email to DHL enquiring about collection - when you submit your email to DHL there is a red warning comes regarding the scam with apologies etc that they cannot reply to all the emails they have received.
Hope this is helpful.
