100 : Coach parking a Traffic Hazard |
Traffic hazard. Caused by obstruction of filter lane from Oxenholme lane onto Burton road. This is caused by Tourist Coaches using it as a coach park.Is this legal?

Webmaster comments   I thought the coaches may have been to do with parties visiting the "K Village" complex, but am informed they are to replace the rail service to Grange during repairs to Arnside viaduct.

99 : Knitted chicks |
I remember reading in The Gazette last year about a lady, I think from Natland, who knits little Easter chicks for charity. Please can anyone tell me how to get in touch with her. Thanks

98 : High Speed Broadband |
I am receiving 10 Mbits/sec broadband by radio link from Hayclose TV mast provided by Kencomp. This is a little more expensive than via phone line. Recommended.

97 : BANGS |
We seem to be plagued by banging noises during the day. I gather it is the farmers trying to scare off birds but why? At first it seemed to be more noticeable near Sedgwick but now it is around Natland.

Anybody else hear it, find it annoying or am I super sensitive? My wife says I am deaf but perhaps it is selective hearing!

96 : Waxwing sightings |
Waxwings seen on Long Meadow lane, but I was unfortunately too slow to get a photograph.
Has anybody else been lucky enough to snap these rare winter visitors?

What an absolute delight to see Mum's (Norma Singleton) picture of the snow leopard that I stitched for Mum's 80th birthday in June. Thanks to all who voted for it.

93 : Memories of a dance band |
About 10 years ago, when I was visiting Oxenholme station to gather data for a railway model I was making, I was given a pamphlet entitled "Oxenholme: The Railway Village" by Laura Oldham. There was nothing there to further my knowledge of railway data but it made very interesting reading, and imagine my surprise when I came across a reference to 'dances in Natland School where 'a band known as the Blue Rascals played'. I was a member of that band for about one year when I was sixteen! And 'the regular dances at the Town Hall' was where I played every Saturday night.

The leader was a man called Charlie Ralph - a real ivory-thumper - a butcher who had a shop in Kirkland. The drummer was Tony Harrison, who worked in the sawmill in Sandylands. The trumpet player, who was the son of the leader of the Kendal Borough Band, took a job with a well-known dance band - I think it was Henry Hall. The sax player came from London to escape the blitz. His day job was book-making. When he was playing the melody, he appeared to be studiously following the dots, but those of us who sat behind could see that while he was playing he was really studying the racing results! I can't remember the bassist. I played guitar - in the rear on the outer edge of the podium, and well remember that girls would always be asking if they could leave their handbags underneath my music stand! The Saturday night dances in the Town Hall were regularly attended by Italian POWs from the Bela Camp in Milnthorpe.

Playing in a dance band was an enjoyable experience - I enjoyed the fast "swing" numbers most, but when it came to a Paul Jones I would opt out and pretend that there was no part written for a guitar! When the band took a breather in the interval, a guy called Brian Coulter used to play piano while I filled-in on drums. He eventually started his own band. What I don't remember is ever playing a gig in Natland! In Endmoor or Preston Patrick, certainly - how well I recall the noise of stamping farmers' boots in the Valleta! We played Grasmere, and even the Midland Hotel in Morecambe but I don't think I ever played Natland. However, this was probably before or after my time.

Thank you for this opportunity to contribute to your forum. I am an old Kendalian - a former pupil of the Kendal Grammar School.

91 : The Kendalls of Natland Park |
Hello Natland.
My grandparents (Edward and Louisa) were farmers at Natland Park and my father and his sisters grew up there. I wondered if anyone remembered them or had any memories of the farm they could share. I visit Natland at least once a year to visit their graves but after my father died I realised I didn't know anything about their lives in Natland.
